The Ecobank Foundation has sponsored a prize for the film most positively portraying Africa.
The Ecobank Foundation recently sponsored the prestigious Sembène Ousman special prize at the FESPACO film festival in Ougadougou, Burkina Faso. The bi-annual FESPACO film festival is the most important film event on the African continent. Ecobank’s sponsored prize was awarded to the film that most positively portrays Africa, which dovetails neatly with the Ecobank values of dignity, honour and good governance.
The winning film was the Cameroonian ‘Miraculous weapons’, produced by Jean-Pierre Bekolo. The winner received a bronze trophy representing the bust of Sembène Ousman and XOF 5,000,000 (around US$8,500).
The Ecobank Foundation has sponsored the special prize since 2007. It honours the memory of Sembène Ousman, a celebrated Senegalese film director, producer and writer, who is often referred to as the ‘father of African film.’
