Tackling gender-based violence

December 1, 2022

Violence against women and girls is the most prevalent human rights violation globally.

Over 1-in-3 women will suffer gender-based violence during their lifetime, while less than 40% of women will seek help. Violence against women also increased during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Action is needed and that’s why we are supporting UN Women’s ’16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign. It runs from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women to International Human Rights Day on 10 December. The #16Day campaign is to encourage everyone to get involved.

“Gender-based violence is preventable,” says Elisa Desbordes-Cisse, our COO. “Let’s amplify the voices of survivors and activists and show our support. We can all act to empower survivors, reduce and prevent violence against women and children, and protect their rights.”

To show their support for the campaign, Ecobankers will wear the colour orange on 2 December in branches and headquarters across the continent. We are also encouraging them to help spreading the ‘end gender-based violence’ message by posting selfies in their orange attire on their social media posts.

Let’s UNiTE! to end violence in all its shapes and build a better tomorrow – for women, children and everyone.
