Women’s role in the fight against malaria

March 22, 2023

Elisa Desbordes, our Chief Operating Officer, speaks to Graphic Online about the role of women in the elimination of malaria.

Our continent suffers 95% of global malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths according to the World Health Organization.

In order to combat malaria, Ecobank launched the Zero Malaria Business Leadership Initiative in partnership with Speak Up Africa and the RBM Partnership to End Malaria. The initiative aims to mobilise business support and finance towards eradicating the disease. To date it has raised US$1.3 million in four countries.

During the interview, Elisa highlighted that malaria disproportionately affects women, and mostly those who are pregnant. She also emphasised the importance of raising awareness about malaria among women so they can make informed decisions about their health and that of their children. She stressed the important role they play in improving healthcare access in their communities.
